Accra: A Ghanaian Language teacher has shared the difficulties she faces working at a private school in Accra, where she teaches pupils from Primary One (P1) to Junior High School Three (JHS3) for a monthly salary of GHS750.
According to Ghana Web, the teacher said she is the only person handling Ghanaian Language classes across all those levels despite the workload. She expressed that the salary is not enough to meet her basic needs, especially as she has to pay for transport and rent while living alone in Accra.
In a video posted by Starr FM, she elaborated on her situation, stating, 'I'm a teacher, and at the same time, I'm also going to school, and talking about our salary, it's really bad. I'm actually a Ghanaian Language teacher. I'm currently teaching kids where I'm working, and I'm teaching from Class 1 to Form 3.'
The teacher noted that she is solely responsible for the teaching of Ghanaian Language to multiple classes and hopes for a salary increase when the school resumes, especially since her Form 3 students performed well this year. 'Only me, and then at the end of the month, I'm only given GHS750. As I'm talking to you right now, the Form 3 students who completed did so well this year, and at least I'm hoping that maybe when school resumes, they'll do something about my salary because it's really bad,' she continued.
She further explained that her financial situation has become challenging due to daily commuting costs and rent expenses. 'I have to join a car every morning to get to school, and I'm renting. My parents are not here. I'm alone here in Accra and surviving, you know, if all these things are going on.' she disclosed.
Additionally, she highlighted the pressure some women face when seeking financial assistance, noting that some people expect sexual favors in return for help. 'With ladies too, we find other means because now, before you ask someone for money, the person wants to do something with you before they give you,' she stated.
Despite the challenges, she mentioned that the small study fees she receives at the end of each week sometimes help her manage her expenses. 'What helps sometimes is that at the end of the week, we are given some study fees like GHS100,' she added.
