Accra: The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Adam Mutawakilu, has disclosed that the company is grappling with a substantial daily water supply shortfall, despite providing water services to approximately 18.5 million individuals across Ghana while having just over one million registered customers.
According to Ghana Web, Mutawakilu elaborated on the situation during an interview on Joy FM, noting that while GWCL boasts over one million registered customers, the actual number of water consumers is much higher. He explained that a single registered customer often serves multiple people, such as a landlord whose connection supplies several tenants.
Mutawakilu emphasized that the company presently produces around 219 million gallons of water each day. This production is significantly lower than the national demand, which stands at approximately 350 million gallons daily, resulting in a shortfall of about 131 million gallons.
In response to this challenge, Mutawakilu highlighted several initiatives that GWCL is undertaking to address the supply gap. These include replacing outdated pipelines, tackling illegal water connections, and upgrading metering systems. These efforts are intended to enhance the reliability of water supply and minimize losses within the distribution network, thereby improving overall service delivery to the populace.
