Accra: Former Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, currently holds a measurable electoral advantage over every major potential National Democratic Congress (NDC) contender ahead of the 2028 general elections, according to a new nationwide survey.
According to Ghana Web, the survey was conducted by Africa Policy Lens from July 27 to August 7, 2026, and involved 16,963 voters across all 276 constituencies. The survey tested Dr. Bawumia in seven hypothetical one-on-one contests. In these matchups, Dr. Bawumia secured between 45.7 percent and 49.9 percent of national voter support.
Dr. Bawumia led Johnson Asiedu Nketia by a margin of 45.8 percent to 42.4 percent, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson by 45.7 percent to 42.8 percent, and Hon. Haruna Iddrisu by 45.9 percent to 41.5 percent. His lead widened against Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, with a margin of 47.4 percent to 40.2 percent, and against Dr. Julius Debrah, with 48.4 percent to 37.9 percent. Dr. Bawumia recorded his largest leads against Hon. Eric Opoku, at 49.8 percent to 33.9 percent, and Prof. Joshua Alabi, at 49.9 percent to 34.4 percent.
Undecided voters ranged from 7.2 percent to 9.3 percent across the different matchups. Beyond the national figures, the survey found Dr. Bawumia winning between nine and eleven of Ghana's sixteen regions in every matchup tested.
Despite his lead, the report cautioned that the survey should not be viewed as a prediction of the outcome of the 2028 election, but rather as a reflection of public opinion at the time the survey was conducted. The report noted that although the findings reflect public opinion at a particular point in time, the consistency of Dr. Bawumia's advantage across all hypothetical contests constitutes a noteworthy pattern.
