TMA-TDC Dispute: ‘It’s good the President has called them’ – Labour expert

Tema: The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has welcomed President John Dramani Mahama's decision to summon the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema, Ebi Bright, and the Managing Director of TDC Ghana Limited, Courage Makafui Nunekpeku, to resolve a growing dispute between the two state institutions.

According to Ghana Web, the disagreement between the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) and TDC Ghana Limited points to a lack of coordination between the two institutions, a situation he described as worrying and potentially damaging to the government. Koomson expressed concern over the TMA's issuance of development permits, which TDC subsequently nullifies by demolishing structures covered by those permits.

Speaking on Ahotor FM's Yepe Ahunu programme, Koomson emphasized the need for cooperation between the institutions for the state's benefit, rather than pursuing separate agendas. He highlighted the significant problems their actions are causing for the government.

The President has called a meeting with the officials, scheduled for Monday, August 17, 2026. The meeting will also include the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and the Minister for Sanitation, Works and Housing. The Presidency has mandated that all parties attend the meeting.

The conflict reached a peak on August 12, when TMA, led by MCE Ebi Bright, halted TDC's construction work in Community 1, Site 3, Tema, due to permit issues. Despite TDC's efforts to clarify the institutional relationship, TMA proceeded to demolish parts of the construction site.

Koomson criticized the use of bulldozers for demolition and suggested town hall meetings to inform residents about unauthorized structures. He commended the President's intervention and emphasized the importance of resolving the institutions' differences to maintain public confidence and protect the government's image.

Koomson warned that the ongoing conflicts could negatively impact the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections. He urged the institutions' leadership to collaborate to protect government property and advance Tema's development.
