Labone: The Ghana Police Service has provided new details on Thursday's incident at Labone, describing it as a foiled robbery plot that targeted three banks in the enclave.
According to Ghana Web, the police received intelligence around 10:45 am indicating that a gang was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank. A team was dispatched to the area, where suspects were found in two vehicles parked near the banks. The statement added that one of the vehicles sped off upon sighting the officers.
Police pursued and arrested a suspect identified as Augustine Okechukwu Maazi, while another occupant escaped. The second vehicle's occupants opened fire on the officers in an attempt to flee, sparking a shootout that left two suspects dead. Earlier, the police announced that a robbery attempt at the GCB Bank Labone branch had been foiled, with two suspects killed and one arrested.
GCB Bank, however, issued a statement denying that its branch had been breached or that customers, staff, funds, or property had been affected. In a recent update, the police confirmed that two vehicles, a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS-7915-17, were recovered along with a blow pistol. Meanwhile, the arrested suspect remains in custody assisting with investigations, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
