Cape coast: Mr Charles Obeng Inkoom, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The election is scheduled for Sunday, November 15, 2026. Mr Obeng Inkoom, a lawyer, stated his ambition to lead the Central Regional NDC to secure significant victories in the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
According to Ghana News Agency, the former legislator emphasized the need for new leadership to engage sidelined and disgruntled members and reinvigorate party activities. He highlighted the importance of enhancing organization, strategies, plans, and cohesion within the party, calling for fresh energy to mobilize members at various levels.
Mr Obeng Inkoom proposed rebranding and restructuring the Central Region NDC to attract grassroots support and strengthen its base for upcoming elections. He stressed the importance of reviving the party's core values of honesty, integrity, probity, and accountability to inspire confidence among the region's populace.
He assured that his leadership would channel the administrative legacy of the late Mr Ato Austin, the first Central Region Minister appointed by the late Jerry John Rawlings, to bring coherence and integrity to the forefront. Mr Obeng Inkoom expressed confidence that delegates would support his vision to transform the NDC and retain its current parliamentary seats.
The former MP outlined his priority to mobilize Cadres, MMDCES, former MPs, and other inactive members to actively participate in party activities. He noted that the Central Region had previously produced prominent figures such as Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman and Finance Minister Dr Ato Forson during President John Mahama's administration.
Mr Kweku Tsen, former political editor of the Daily Graphic newspaper and former Presidential Staffer, cited recent polls by Mr Musa Dankwa indicating a decline in the party's base. He expressed hope that Mr Obeng Inkoom's experience would rejuvenate party activities and restore its strength.
