Accra: A member of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) National Communication Team, Ellen Ama Daaku, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take decisive action against persons within his government who may be involved in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
According to Ghana Web, Daaku spoke on GTV on August 7, 2026, emphasizing that the fight against galamsey is challenging but requires strong political will. She urged President Mahama not to protect any appointee found to be engaging in activities that exacerbate the issue.
Daaku highlighted a statement from President Mahama acknowledging the involvement of some government members in galamsey activities. She stressed the severity of the galamsey crisis, particularly in light of the impact on the Mahama administration following the death of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and other officials in a military helicopter crash while on an assignment linked to efforts against illegal mining.
She further criticized local government officials allegedly issuing receipts to illegal miners for monetary collections. Daaku expressed her confusion over how municipal chief executives could justify such actions and reiterated her call for President Mahama to act against officials undermining the fight against illegal mining.
