Tamale: Fire has gutted the family house of the late Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, the former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, at Changli in the Tamale Metropolis. The incident has displaced several occupants and resulted in the destruction of valuable property.
According to Ghana News Agency, the fire caused extensive damage to rooms occupied by members of the family and other residents living in the compound house. The unfortunate event occurred on Wednesday, August 05, 2026, at about 16:20 GMT, just a day before the first anniversary of the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of Dr Mohammed and several others.
Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded promptly after receiving a distress call and managed to bring the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to adjoining buildings. Assistant Divisional Officer Grade II (ADO II) Baba Hudu, the Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, confirmed the incident to journalists in Tamale. He stated that the GNFS swiftly responded to the emergency and worked diligently to contain the fire.
Mr Hudu assured that the fire was successfully extinguished and that investigations had commenced to establish its cause. He promised that the outcome would be made public once completed. Some affected occupants told the Ghana News Agency that they lost virtually all their belongings in the blaze. Items destroyed included clothing, personal documents, television sets, refrigerators, and other household appliances.
The affected residents described the incident as devastating and appealed to the government, benevolent organisations, and members of the public for support to help them recover from their losses.
