Accra: Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, emphasized the importance of road safety in Ghana's 'Black Star Experience' initiative, a key component of the country's global tourism strategy. She stated that while the nation continues to make strides in cultural heritage, arts, and hospitality, ensuring the safe and confident travel of visitors across the country is crucial.
According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Gomashie made these remarks during the launch of the Road Travel Safety and Tourism Project in Accra. This initiative is a collaboration between the Ghana Tourism Authority Ex-Staff Association (GHATEX), the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), and the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA). She praised the retired GTA staff for their continued contribution to national service, highlighting their partnership with the NRSA and GTA as timely and commendable.
The Minister also noted that the launch coincided with the 52nd anniversary of Ghana's transition to right-hand driving, describing this as a milestone that has improved the transport system. She emphasized that road safety is an essential aspect of destination quality, stating that every life saved on the roads not only protects families and communities but also boosts confidence in Ghana as a safe and welcoming destination.
Madam Gomashie assured stakeholders of the Ministry's commitment to collaborating with the NRSA, GTA, transport operators, local authorities, and development partners to promote safety awareness and responsible road use across tourism corridors. In alignment with this goal, Mr. Abraham Amaliba, Chief Executive Officer of the NRSA, remarked that the project should symbolize the country's commitment to safeguarding lives, stressing that the success of a nation is not solely measured by economic performance but also by the safety and security of its people.
Madam Adeline Boateng, President of GHATEX, highlighted that the association's flagship project demonstrates its commitment to supporting tourism development beyond active service. She explained that GHATEX, inaugurated in 2023 and legally registered under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992), aims to collaborate with government and private institutions on sustainable tourism initiatives. The road travel safety campaign is designed to promote safer roads and stimulate interest in domestic tourism through sustained public education.
Madam Boateng appealed to stakeholders, including development partners, civil society organizations, transport operators, and the media, to support the initiative and help cultivate a lasting culture of road safety.
