Mohammed Polo Attributes Black Stars’ Style Disappearance to Lack of Local Players

Accra: Legendary Ghanaian footballer Mohammed Polo has stated that the lack of local-based players in the national team has led to the disappearance of the Black Stars' iconic style of play in recent times. He explained that since most of the players in the national team are foreign-based, they do not play with the same cohesion and chemistry that once entertained fans. According to Ghana Web, Polo further indicated that the lack of commitment from players during matches could be attributed to the absence of more local players in the squad. He mentioned in an interview with Asempa FM, "Even that sort of Ghanaian style of playing isn't there anymore because almost the majority of our players are foreign-based. Only the goalkeeper. So that sort of character and commitment was lacking." Polo also expressed concern about the Black Stars' inconsistent performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which ultimately led to their elimination in the Round of 32. "When they went to the World Cup, the way they started, ever yone was happy, and suddenly they cut it. Why did it cut? It shows that there are some commitment issues or a lack of chemistry among the players in camp," he added. The Black Stars exited the 2026 Mundial in the Round of 32 after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia under the tutelage of head coach Carlos Queiroz.
