Accra: Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has voiced his opposition to the government's current practice of appointing Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), advocating instead for their direct election by residents. Fuseini believes that accountability should be established at the local level rather than through central government oversight.
According to Ghana Web, Fuseini expressed his views during an interview on Eyewitness News, which was shared on X on August 4, 2026. He critiqued the existing system as a misinterpretation of the public's desire for accountability. "It's not executive accountability that Ghanaians are looking for," he stated. "They're looking for accountability at the lower level. That people who are elected at the lower level to be their DCEs must be directly accountable to the people and not somewhere else."
Fuseini also criticized the nomination process for MMDCEs, highlighting a lack of transparency and community involvement. He questioned the president's role in the nomination process, pointing out the reduction of candidates by the Public Services Commission (PSC): "So for the president to say, I'm going to nominate five, the PSC will pull it down to three, and then."
In addition to his views on local governance, Fuseini expressed reservations about extending the presidential term to five years, stating, "No one has convinced me why Ghana needs a five-year presidential term. Until then, I will not support it...What we should be discussing is efficiency, not extending presidential terms."
