Central tongu: The Central Tongu District has been selected as one of the beneficiary districts under Cluster Two of the Ghana Market Access and Connectivity Project (GMACP), a US$500 million World Bank/International Development Association (IDA)-supported initiative to improve feeder road infrastructure across the country. Mr Gabriel Roosevelt Hottordze, Member of Parliament for Central Tongu, announced the development, highlighting it as a significant milestone in the district's efforts to enhance road connectivity and stimulate economic growth.
According to Ghana News Agency, the district's inclusion followed sustained lobbying and engagements undertaken in collaboration with Mr Dodzi Addison Mornyuie, the Central Tongu District Chief Executive. The GMACP aims to facilitate the rehabilitation of approximately 1,050 kilometers of feeder roads across selected regions, with 11 districts in the Volta Region, including Central Tongu, earmarked to benefit under the program.
Mr. Hottordze emphasized that the project would improve all-season access to markets, strengthen connectivity between farming communities and market centers, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance the movement of people, goods, and agricultural produce. He added that the intervention would also improve livelihoods by making it easier for farmers, traders, and transport operators to access economic opportunities.
'The inclusion of Central Tongu under the project is a significant step towards addressing our feeder road challenges and opening up more communities for economic activity and development,' the MP stated. He expressed appreciation to all stakeholders whose efforts contributed to the district's selection and reaffirmed his commitment to working with the Government, development partners, and the District Assembly to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
Mr. Hottordze noted that the rehabilitation of the feeder roads would complement ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and accelerate socio-economic development in the constituency. The Ghana Market Access and Connectivity Project seeks to improve rural transport infrastructure by upgrading critical feeder roads to facilitate agricultural production, improve market access, and strengthen resilience in beneficiary communities.
