Accra: The Bank of Ghana has joined the nation in mourning the death of Yaa-Naa Abukari II, King of Dagbon, describing him as a leader whose wisdom helped anchor peace and development in the country.
According to Ghana Web, the central bank released a statement on Monday, July 27, 2026, expressing deep sorrow over the passing of the monarch, who was regarded as a revered custodian of culture, peace, and unity. The Bank attributed Ghana's stability significantly to the late king's leadership, acknowledging that his guidance would be greatly missed.
The statement from the Bank of Ghana emphasized the substantial impact Yaa-Naa Abukari II had on the country's stability and development. 'His Majesty was a revered custodian of culture, peace and unity, and his leadership and wisdom contributed immensely to the stability and development of Ghana. His wise counsel and leadership will be greatly missed,' the statement read.
The Bank extended its condolences to the elders and people of Dagbon, as well as the bereaved royal family, and prayed for strength for the kingdom during the mourning period. Yaa-Naa Abukari II, the 41st overlord of Dagbon, passed away after a short illness while receiving medical treatment in South Africa.
Born in Mion in 1939, Yaa-Naa Abukari II ascended from serving as the chief of Savelugu to the Yendi throne in January 2019. His enskinment ended a prolonged chieftaincy dispute that had left the position vacant for 16 years following the 2002 killing of his predecessor. The process that led to his enskinment was widely credited with restoring unity between Dagbon's Abudu and Andani royal gates.
