Accra: Mr George Bosompim, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, producer, and director, has urged Ghanaian filmmakers to explore digital film distribution channels beyond television and cinemas.
According to Ghana News Agency, Bosompim emphasized in an interview with GNA Entertainment that television should be the last distribution channel for film producers and creatives, as existing and emerging online platforms could help them generate more revenue. He highlighted that many digital channels are available for filmmakers to showcase their work, advising against prioritizing television since it often does not pay or commission productions. Bosompim stressed the importance of online platforms and securing digital distribution contracts to maximize earnings.
He further noted that effective coordination among state agencies and structures within Ghana's creative industry could significantly increase income for filmmakers and content producers. Bosompim pointed out that essential elements such as insurance and royalties need to be addressed to ensure sustainable income for those in the film industry, rather than relying on short-term gains from successful films.
Bosompim also commended the GH20 million fund allocated to the creative arts sector and urged transparency among stakeholders managing the fund. He encouraged the support of quality productions that could compete internationally, including at prestigious awards like the Oscars. As a UniMAC lecturer and member of the Oscars Committee, he advised local filmmakers to familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations of international film awards before submitting entries to avoid disqualification.
Additionally, Bosompim advised young filmmakers to learn from seasoned professionals and collaborate on projects, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and avoiding shortcuts to success. He stated that filmmakers should embrace teamwork, with different individuals handling various stages of film production, from pre-production to post-production, to ensure quality outcomes.
