Minority Criticizes Majority for Excluding Media from Bank of Ghana Governor’s Briefing

Accra: A sharp clash erupted in Parliament on Tuesday after the Majority caucus shut out the media from the Bank of Ghana Governor's appearance before the Committee of the Whole. Speaking to journalists at the forecourt of Parliament on July 15, 2026, Ranking Member on the Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, accused the Majority of deliberately concealing information that could credit former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for Ghana's recent forex market stability.

According to Ghana Web, Oppong Nkrumah claimed that the Bank of Ghana's ability to intervene in the market was due to the domestic gold purchase program, which is generating the forex proceeds used for market intervention. He questioned why the Majority was preventing the governor from sharing this with the entire country, suggesting that the media blackout was politically motivated and intended to prevent Dr. Bawumia from receiving credit.

The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, responded by stating that the decision was based on standard parliamentary practice rather than political motives. He referred to Standing Order 266, noting that independent constitutional bodies typically appear before the Committee of the Whole without media coverage. Ayariga further explained that while there was a previous exception for the Bank of Ghana Governor's appearance regarding the cost of the bank's office building, the committee retains the right to decide whether its proceedings are open to the public.
