Accra: An aspiring National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah, also known as Nana Kay, has issued a stern rebuke to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). He has accused the government of employing state institutions to intimidate opposition members, describing their actions as gross lawlessness and a violation of human rights through arbitrary arrests and persistent harassment.
According to Ghana Web, Nana Kay voiced his concerns during an appearance on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM. He alleged that the government is engaging in "Rambo-style" arrests targeting NPP members. Despite these actions, he urged party supporters to remain calm and steadfast, asserting that the government's hostile treatment should not discourage them.
Nana Kay commented on the reported arrest of Denis Miracles Aboagye, Special Aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. He noted that the details surrounding Aboagye's arrest are unclear and emphasized the necessity for him to have access to legal counsel and family before the party can confirm the reasons for his detention.
He further condemned the current political climate, stating that the human rights and democracy protected for decades are being undermined. Nana Kay expressed fear over the situation and criticized Raymond Archer, the Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), reminding him that political power is temporary.
Nana Kay questioned whether EOCO is the appropriate institution to investigate alleged corruption-related issues and criticized the second coming of President John Dramani Mahama, asserting that it appears aimed at dismantling the NPP. He declared that the NPP remains strong and resolute, undeterred by arrest threats, even against Dr Bawumia.
Highlighting the disparity in the government's actions, Nana Kay pointed out that despite recent flood-related deaths, the Greater Accra Regional Minister received a Best Minister's Award. He accused the administration of hypocrisy, citing Sammy Gyamfi, the Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, as an example, who previously criticized the NPP over flooding issues, yet Ghana now faces even worse flooding under the NDC.
Nana Kay maintained that the arrest of Miracles Aboagye is an intimidation tactic and an abuse of power, likening the administration's governance style to that of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, who suppressed political dissent. He also condemned the arrest of broadcast journalist Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, alleging police misconduct during the arrest and emphasizing the need for lawful enforcement.
