Adaklu: Mrs. Stella Vidzro, Adaklu District Environmental Health Officer (DEHO), led hundreds of workers in a clean-up exercise at Adaklu Waya, the district capital.
According to Ghana News Agency, the workers were drawn from the District Assembly, Decentralized Departments, the Police, and Fire Services. They tackled a refuse dump near the Adaklu Waya market, weeded surrounding areas, and desilted gutters. Notable figures like Mr. Jerry Yao Ameko, Adaklu District Chief Executive (DCE), Mrs. Esther Buakuma, Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of Adaklu district, and Mr. Stephen Toffa, Adaklu District Fire Officer, joined the effort.
Mrs. Vidzro emphasized the importance of a clean environment for health and quality of life, stating that it reduces illness risks by minimizing harmful bacteria and viruses. She urged that environmental cleanliness extend beyond homes and workplaces to public spaces. She also mentioned the enforcement of sanitation bylaws to deter violations.
Mr. Ameko highlighted the need for attitudinal change, warning that cleared debris might return without it. He encouraged Ghanaians to maintain clean surroundings through actions like proper waste management and clearing drains. He also advised against building on waterways and dumping waste in drains, citing recent nationwide floods. Mr. Ameko suggested that funds spent on flood-related disasters could be redirected to more profitable projects if preventive measures are taken. He urged communal sanitation exercises to maintain community health.
