Aggrieved NPP Members Invoke Curses After Elections in Bantama

Accra: There were scenes of curses and libation pouring in Bantama in the Ashanti Region following the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) internal elections held on Saturday, July 11, 2026. Some aggrieved party members invoked curses against delegates and the constituency's Member of Parliament, Francis Asenso-Boakye, following the outcome of the elections.

According to Ghana Web, one of the disgruntled members, while performing the ritual with a bottle of schnapps and an egg, declared his intentions to invoke the wrath of the gods: 'I do this in my interest and that of delegates in Bantama. If you claim to be a delegate and you do not do what is right, I call on the gods of this land to deal with you and your entire generation.' The ritual concluded with the smashing of the egg on the ground and pouring schnapps over it.

The NPP's internal elections are part of the party's broader reorganisation efforts following its defeat in the 2024 general elections. The constituency polls were held nationwide on July 11, 2026, to elect grassroots executives. However, the exercise was marred by reports of violence in some areas, court injunctions in others, and calls for unity from the party's leadership.
