Accra: The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) has sanctioned a US$47.4 million financing package for Azumah Resources Ghana Limited, aimed at advancing the Black Volta Gold Project. This investment signifies a notable enhancement for Ghana's mining industry, as the nation continues its endeavor to expand its large-scale gold operations.
According to Ghana Web, the financing package was one of five major projects approved by EBID during its 99th Ordinary Session of the Board of Directors on July 6, 2026. Under the leadership of EBID President, Dr. George Agyekum Donkor, the decision was made to fund the procurement of long-lead process plant equipment and to undertake essential early-stage development activities essential for propelling the Black Volta Gold Project toward production.
This funding aligns with Azumah Resources' objective of establishing the project as a key player in Ghana's burgeoning gold mining sector. The financial support is anticipated to expedite development timelines and bolster future production capabilities.
The transaction exemplifies EBID's expanding role in financing pivotal private-sector investments across West Africa, with a focus on projects that have the potential to generate employment, attract additional capital, and contribute to economic growth.
"The projects approved during this 99th Board Session demonstrate EBID's unwavering commitment to financing development solutions that directly improve the lives of West African citizens," stated Dr. Donkor. He further emphasized that these investments, spanning clean energy, transport infrastructure, healthcare, and financial sector resilience, will enhance regional competitiveness and promote sustainable growth.
The Azumah Resources financing is part of a larger investment approval package exceeding US$417 million, encompassing infrastructure, healthcare, housing, and public-sector development projects in the region. Notably, the package includes US$260 million for a segment of Nigeria's Trans-Saharan Highway and pound 80 million for a regional hospital in C´te d'Ivoire.
EBID's recent approvals align with its Growth, Resilience and Optimisation (GRO) Strategy, prioritizing transformative infrastructure, human capital development, private-sector expansion, and regional integration.
For Ghana, the Black Volta Gold Project financing represents a crucial endorsement of the country's mining sector and underscores the increasing involvement of regional development finance institutions in supporting significant resource-based investments.
Headquartered in Lom©, Togo, EBID is the development finance institution for the 15 ECOWAS member states, providing financing for projects across various sectors including infrastructure, industry, agriculture, environment, and social services.
