Accra: Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ngleshie Amanfrom, Alexander Ackuaku, has urged authorities to ensure that debris from demolished structures on Ramsar sites and waterways is promptly removed, warning that leaving the rubble behind continues to obstruct drainage channels and worsen flooding.
According to Ghana Web, Mr. Ackuaku highlighted during an interview on TV XYZ that demolition exercises alone are insufficient if the remnants of the structures are abandoned at the sites. He emphasized that the debris occupies valuable drainage space, preventing the free flow of stormwater during heavy rains and contributing to recurring floods.
"When it rains, because of the debris, the water does not get a place to flow through, and in the end, it causes flooding," he explained. Mr. Ackuaku called on the relevant state agencies to make debris clearance an integral part of all demolition exercises carried out on Ramsar sites and other unauthorized developments.
"They should begin to collect the debris. Let us stop some of these things and see whether the situation will change," he urged.
