Accra: The government has initiated the distribution of relief items to victims affected by the June 29 flood disaster, as announced by Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in-charge of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesman.
According to Ghana News Agency, emergency relief items were successfully dispatched and issued to the municipal areas of La Dade Kotopon, Ayawaso Central, and Korley Klottey in the capital on Wednesday, July 1. Mr. Ofosu, speaking at a press conference, noted that a second wave of relief distributions commenced on Thursday, July 2, targeting the seven critical districts of Krowor Municipality, Ga East (Dome Kwabena), Shai Osuduku, Ada East, Ablekuma North, Ada West, and Okaikwei North.
Mr. Ofosu emphasized that the floods have impacted seven regions, with the Greater Accra, Volta, and Central Regions being the most affected. He assured the public that the government's response has been swift, coordinated, and ongoing. Under the President's directive, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has been mobilizing and distributing essential relief items, including food, clean drinking water, temporary shelter materials, blankets, and medical supplies.
The distribution to the affected districts is being conducted in structured phases to ensure orderly and rapid deployment. While focusing on the high-density displacements in Greater Accra, logistics are being organized to dispatch substantial relief packages to the Central Region, Volta Region, and all other affected districts nationwide.
NADMO regional coordinators are actively on the ground, and additional supplies are expected to reach their communities starting tomorrow. Mr. Ofosu urged citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to safety warnings and report emergencies as they navigate the aftermath of the disaster.
The Minister affirmed that the government is committed to ensuring every displaced family is safely housed, every affected district restored, and communities rebuilt to be more resilient against future weather anomalies. He extended gratitude to the nation's emergency service workers, the military, the police, health workers, and volunteer groups for their tireless efforts.
