Accra: Heavy rains that began late on Sunday and continued into Monday morning have resulted in widespread flooding across parts of Accra, causing significant disruptions to traffic flow during peak hours. The downpour has left several major roads submerged, with vehicles struggling to navigate through the flooded sections or being abandoned altogether by motorists.
According to Ghana Web, the morning rush hour was heavily impacted as commuters faced long delays, with many streets turning into streams and severe congestion occurring throughout the city. In several low-lying communities, homes and shops were submerged, prompting residents to relocate their belongings to higher ground as water levels rose.
Authorities have urged motorists to avoid flooded routes and advised residents in flood-prone areas to exercise caution and take necessary safety measures. Some of the most affected areas include sections of the N1 Highway, Apenkwa towards Tesano, Dzorwulu, Accra-Kasoa stretch, Weija, and Afienya, among others.
Accra's recurring flooding issues are often attributed to inadequate drainage systems, poor waste disposal practices, and rapid urban development. Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecasted continued rainfall of varying intensity across parts of southern Ghana, including coastal areas, throughout the day.
