Accra: Heavy rainfall on Monday, June 29, 2026, led to disastrous flooding across Accra, claiming the lives of at least 12 people and destroying numerous properties. While the rains brought sorrow to many families, they also resulted in a series of unexpected and widely shared moments on social media.
According to Ghana Web, the floods gave rise to several viral incidents, capturing the attention of many online. One such moment involved a flooded warehouse in the Tema area, where gates were swept open, allowing residents to collect floating goods, including toiletries and biscuits, in what was described as "free shopping."
Another incident saw a waakye seller drawing a crowd despite the downpour. The video of people standing in the rain, waiting to be served, sparked discussions on social media about the seller's dedication to business amid the flooding.
A particularly unusual scene involved alleged sex workers near Circle Railway, who were seen swimming through the floodwaters, assisted by local area boys. These women were in search of safer shelter, as documented by videos shared online.
In a display of determination, a taxi driver spent over two hours trying to save his vehicle from being swept away, clinging to it despite the rising water levels. Similarly, a motorcyclist was captured being swept away with his bike after refusing to abandon it, despite pleas from an excavator operator.
Adding to the chaos, a man was filmed breaking a wall between his and his neighbor's property to redirect floodwaters. The video commentary indicated that while his house was flooded, his neighbor's was not, leading to the drastic action.
In response to the devastation, President John Dramani Mahama announced a GHS300 million post-flood relief package for victims after conducting an aerial inspection of the affected areas.
