Ghana Battles Severe Flooding as Accra and Surrounding Regions Grapple with Rising Waters

Accra: In the early hours of June 29, 2026, the city of Accra was hit by heavy rains, leading to severe flooding in various areas. According to Ghana Web, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has recorded significant rainfall, turning major parts of the city into rivers. Areas such as Kaneshie, Odawna, and Adabraka have been severely affected, with buses stalled and market stalls floating away.

Residents have been warned of more rain to come, with predictions of 6 to 7 inches of rainfall expected on June 30. The flooding has disrupted lives, with many families being forced to seek shelter elsewhere. Ama Serwaa, a dressmaker in the Circle area, described her struggle to salvage her business as her shop was inundated with water. She, along with other families, is relocating to a church hall in hopes of finding temporary relief.

Three hundred kilometers away, in the Volta Region, communities are on high alert as floodwaters rise. In Shime, Anloga, farmer Togbe Korsi expressed concern over the damage to his crops and the uncertainty of food security for his family. The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is actively working in the region, but they face challenges in addressing the recurring cycle of floods.

In the Western Region, residents of Samreboi are taking precautions, moving to higher grounds as they anticipate further flooding. The community has voiced their concerns about the impact of unregulated mining and inadequate drainage systems contributing to the flooding.

The aftermath of the 2023 Akosombo and Kpong dam spillages is still felt, with thousands of people displaced and relief efforts ongoing. The government has released funds to assist affected families, but the process of rebuilding remains slow.

The severe flooding has highlighted underlying issues in urban planning and infrastructure. Engineers and planners have called for better drainage systems and sustainable development practices to mitigate future disasters. With climate change contributing to more intense storms, there is an urgent need for comprehensive measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
