Accra: Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has raised alarms over the Mahama administration's decision to prioritize GoldBod over agricultural development. He argues that this shift in focus has resulted in significant setbacks for the agricultural sector.
According to Ghana Web, Afenyo-Markin criticized the government's emphasis on GoldBod, stating that the lack of investment in agriculture has led to missed opportunities for economic gains. He highlighted that instead of the losses incurred through GoldBod, the government could have bolstered the agricultural sector to achieve better outcomes.
Addressing members of TESCON, Afenyo-Markin pointed out that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reports losses exceeding 9 billion from GoldBod transactions. He questioned the government's commitment to ongoing projects, such as Agenda 111, and suggested that a focus on agriculture could have offered economic stability. He noted the rising costs of locally produced staples, such as rice and maize, compared to imported alternatives, attributing this to the government's current policy direction.
