Sekondi-takoradi: Mr. Fredrick Faustinus Faidoo, the Chief Executive of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), has issued a stern warning to residents, urging them to refrain from entrusting their waste disposal to individuals he described as "junkies." These individuals, according to Mr. Faidoo, are known for improperly dumping refuse in gutters and unauthorized areas, which not only tarnishes the city's appearance but also poses health risks to its inhabitants.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Faidoo emphasized the Assembly's commitment to tackling this issue by establishing a task force and planning the installation of CCTV cameras to monitor illegal dumping activities. He warned that anyone caught either handing over waste to these junkies or personally dumping waste in unauthorized locations would face legal consequences.
During a press briefing on the Assembly's current initiatives, Mr. Faidoo urged homeowners to provide their own waste bins and engage in waste segregation to support the city's recycling efforts. He highlighted the establishment of a recycling center at Sekondi Kokompe and encouraged residents to dispose of their waste materials there.
Mr. Faidoo also shared the Assembly's ambitious plan to convert waste into energy, revealing a collaboration with SUS Environment, a Chinese company, to set up a factory in the metropolis. Representatives from the company are expected to arrive soon to finalize the agreements.
In addition to waste management, the Assembly plans to address the issue of public toilets located in the middle of communities, which emit unpleasant odors. Mr. Faidoo disclosed that the Assembly would demolish these outdated facilities and would not approve new building plans lacking proper toilet facilities.
The Assembly is also taking action against stray animals, with 12 herdsmen currently facing prosecution. Mr. Faidoo stressed the importance of preventing domestic animals from wandering freely and required owners to obtain appropriate licenses for rearing them.
