Accra: Actress Nikki Samonas recently opened up about the intense backlash she faced following an intimate scene with Nigerian actor Jim Iyke in the 2012 film, ‘My First Wife’. Speaking on Adom TV, Samonas revealed how the negative reaction from Ghanaians left her feeling disliked and emotionally affected for years.
According to Ghana Web, the backlash stemmed from the intimate scene with Iyke, which attracted harsh criticism and negative comments. Samonas expressed her confusion over the public’s response, emphasizing that the scene was purely a professional acting role and not a reflection of her personal life. “It was just a movie o, I beg you, it was just a movie,” she reiterated, describing the experience as “horrible” and wishing she could escape from the scrutiny.
The negative reactions took a toll on Samonas emotionally, leading her to withdraw from public life and avoid social media. “I really coiled that time. If I knew ignoring comments on social media was good at that time, I wouldn’t have read them because it was really bad,” she shared. Her withdrawal extended to her career choices, as she ignored calls from Ghanaian filmmaker Abdul Salam Mumuni who wanted to cast her in a new project.
Despite the challenges, the opportunity to work with Jim Iyke was a significant moment in her career. Samonas recounted how Iyke noticed her talent while she was working on another film in Ghana, and subsequently chose her for ‘My First Wife’. This collaboration with top stars marked a notable period in her acting journey.
