Phnom penh: The General Department of Immigration in the Kingdom of Cambodia has issued a strict directive to all African nationals, including Ghanaians, to leave the country by May 31, 2026, or face arrest and prosecution. This announcement has stirred concern among the African communities residing under a visa waiver arrangement in Cambodia.
According to Ghana Web, the notice affects citizens from Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, and other African nations who are living in Cambodia under the expiring visa waiver program. The statement, issued by the Cambodian immigration authority on behalf of the Royal Government, emphasizes that foreign nationals who have settled their fines must comply with the exit order by the deadline.
The official notice highlighted that the waiver granted to African nationals will officially expire on May 31, 2026. It warned that any individuals remaining in Cambodia from June 1, 2026, onwards will be subject to arrest, either at the airport or within the country.
The directive outlines severe penalties for non-compliance, including a two-year jail term and an $8,000 fine for those who overstay. It further noted that immigration police would launch nationwide operations to apprehend foreigners who are hiding or violating the order starting June 1, 2026.
The statement from the Cambodian authorities reiterated that the government would not tolerate any breaches of its immigration laws and urged all affected nationals to adhere to the directive. Ghanaians and other African nationals have only three days remaining to exit Cambodia to avoid facing legal consequences.
