Accra: NDC communicator, Elikem Kotoko, has criticised the tone of political commentary in Ghana, stating that free speech should not be used as a shield for personal attacks. He highlighted concerns over the nature of political discourse, pointing to comments made by some party communicators and activists, which he described as uncivil.
According to Ghana Web, Kotoko argued that some commentators had repeatedly crossed acceptable boundaries by making personal remarks about political opponents and public officials. He emphasized that free speech is not a guarantee to be reckless, particularly in the context of recent exchanges between political figures.
Kotoko pointed out the uncivil comments that have been prevalent over the years, noting that sometimes people go overboard. He acknowledged that while Ghana's democracy allows for criticism and open debate, political communication should still be guided by respect and responsibility.
He further remarked on the influence public figures have on their supporters and the wider political climate, stating that careless speech by leaders can lead to supporters taking things too far. Kotoko urged political parties to promote issue-based engagement rather than rely on inflammatory commentary.
In his view, it is important for political communication to focus on facts and proper discussion of issues, allowing for disagreement without damaging institutions or insulting individuals.
