Accra: Former Deputy Finance Minister Stephen Amoah has praised Dr Cassiel Ato Forson for his performance so far, but insists that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) cannot yet claim to have outperformed the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. Speaking in an interview on Citi FM, Dr Amoah argued that the current government inherited an economy that had already begun recovering under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme introduced by the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
According to Ghana Web, Dr Amoah used a medical analogy to illustrate his point, stating that the previous administration had already stabilised the economy before leaving office, although some effects of the crisis were still visible. He explained that the NDC took over an economy that was in a recovery stage, akin to a patient whose infection had been treated but still showed lingering symptoms.
Dr Amoah emphasized that it is too early to conclude that the current administration has performed better economically, particularly because the full impact of its policies has not yet been measured. He questioned whether the NDC had completed any work or projects that could be quantified in terms of GDP contribution.
He also noted that the NDC government undertook limited spending during its first year in office due to pending parliamentary approvals and compliance with IMF conditions. Dr Amoah urged Ghanaians to reserve judgment on the government's economic management until future reports from the Auditor-General provide a clearer picture of public spending and fiscal discipline.
The former deputy finance minister raised concerns about the transparency of the NDC's spending on appointees' emoluments, calling for patience and further evaluation of the government's economic policies.
