Accra: Former Deputy Minister of Energy, Collins Adomako-Mensah, and Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, were embroiled in a contentious debate on Metro TV, sparked by a past comment made by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga about Supreme Court judges.
According to Ghana Web, the exchange took place during the Good Morning Ghana show aired on May 20, 2026. Collins Adomako-Mensah expressed his discontent concerning remarks Mahama Ayariga made on JoyNews during the former government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Ayariga had stated that knowledgeable individuals should occupy the Supreme Court, referencing a 1962 US Supreme Court case, Baker v Carr, to make his point.
In his response, Collins Adomako-Mensah argued that Ayariga's comments were an affront to the Supreme Court judges, suggesting they implied a lack of intelligence. He insisted that describing the judges as lacking knowledge was tantamount to calling them unintelligent.
Kwesi Pratt Jnr, however, interjected to offer a different perspective. He contended that Ayariga's statement was not an insult but a reference to legal principles that the Ghanaian judges might not have been acquainted with. Highlighting the context of Ayariga's comment, Pratt emphasized that it was about a legal precedent rather than a direct attack on the judges' intellect.
Throughout the exchange, Adomako-Mensah maintained his position, reiterating that members of the current government had previously made derogatory references to the Supreme Court judges, labeling them as 'Unanimous FC.' Kwesi Pratt countered this by clarifying that the comments were about the judges' knowledge of specific legal cases, not their overall intelligence.
