Geneva: President John Dramani Mahama will on Monday deliver the keynote address at the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to Ghana News Agency, this opportunity arises from an invitation extended by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO). Upon his arrival at the Geneva Airport, President Mahama was welcomed by Mrs. Nane Annan, the wife of the late former UN Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan, alongside Dr. Tedros. Mrs. Annan also took the President on a tour of the Kofi Annan Lounge at the airport, which is dedicated to the memory of the former Ghanaian diplomat.
The Presidency's statement highlighted that a central theme of President Mahama's address will be the 'Accra Reset Initiative.' This is a project he advocates to promote 'health sovereignty.' The President is expected to challenge global leaders to reconsider the position of the Global South, especially in light of significant reductions in international donor funding. His speech is set to underline the critical need for developing nations to establish self-reliant health systems.
In addition to his address, President Mahama is scheduled to engage in bilateral meetings and will host an Accra Reset side event themed 'Geneva Clarion Call.'
