Accra: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced a special evacuation arrangement for 300 Ghanaian nationals currently residing in South Africa, aimed at assisting citizens who wish to return home.
According to Ghana Web, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, shared on social media on May 18, 2026, that the designated departure point for the evacuation is OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. The special chartered flight is scheduled to leave South Africa on May 21, 2026, at 5:00 a.m. The Ministry emphasized that the evacuation exercise is fully funded by the government, ensuring there is no cost to the citizens being transported back home.
The Ministry noted that the evacuation is a completely free service and is part of the government's efforts to support affected nationals. Ghanaians in South Africa who require further details or assistance have been encouraged to contact the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria.
This initiative comes in response to recent xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa.
