Accra: The Executive Director of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr. Rasheed Draman, has stated that Parliament has limited options concerning the detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong. In a recent interview, Dr. Draman emphasized that Parliament must cooperate with the Dutch authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the case.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Draman clarified that parliamentary immunity has its limits and does not protect lawmakers if they commit crimes. He suggested that Parliament's role should involve cooperating with the Dutch authorities to ascertain why the MP was detained. He also noted that if criminal conduct is established, the relevant legal systems would take precedence, regardless of jurisdiction.
Dr. Draman highlighted the potential involvement of the United States government in the case, which could influence legal proceedings in either the Netherlands or the United States. He suggested that extradition complexities might explain the swift action by foreign authorities without local collaboration, indicating that such processes might otherwise drag on if handled domestically.
The ACEPA director pointed out the additional legal complications faced by sitting MPs, which could have prompted the foreign authorities to act quickly. Dr. Draman expressed concerns about the wider implications of the situation for Parliament, democracy, and the constituents of Asante Akim North.
He also recommended stronger background checks for parliamentary candidates to ensure they are of clean record, suggesting that political parties currently lack rigorous screening processes. Parliament has confirmed the detention of Ohene Frimpong at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, where he was intercepted by Dutch security officials on suspicion of financial crimes.
