KNUST Appoints Prof. Christian Agyare as New Vice-Chancellor

Kumasi: The Governing Council of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) at its 292nd (Special) Meeting appointed Professor Christian Agyare as the next Vice-Chancellor of the University. His term will commence on 1st August 2026, concluding on 31st July 2030. He succeeds Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson, whose tenure ends on 31st July 2026.

According to Ghana News Agency, Prof. Agyare will be the 13th Vice-Chancellor of KNUST since its establishment on 6th October 1951. He is known for his extensive contributions to pharmaceutical sciences and higher education management, having served as Provost of the College of Health Sciences at KNUST. His academic journey includes earning a Bachelor and Master of Pharmacy from KNUST and a Doctor rerum naturalium degree from the University of Muenster, Germany. His postdoctoral work at Novartis/Seeding Labs in Boston and the University of California, San Francisco, contributed to his expertise in parasitic diseases and pharmaceutical research.

Prof. Agyare, a Professor of Pharmaceutical Microbiology, has published over 200 peer-reviewed research papers, achieving significant recognition with an H-index of 36 and more than 5,000 citations. He is ranked among the top scientists globally and the top 100 researchers in Ghana in the AD Scientific Index 2026 rankings. His research covers areas such as natural products pharmacology, antimicrobial resistance, and anticancer drug discovery.

He has secured over $11 million in research grants from organizations like the German Research Foundation and the World Bank. His global academic status is highlighted by his election as the first African member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research and his membership in editorial boards of over thirty international journals.
