The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has announced the timeline for the implementation of the new Legal Education Reform Act. He revealed that the Act's full financial provisions will be included in the 2027 Budget Statement, which is scheduled to be presented by the finance minister in November 2026.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Ayine, speaking to journalists after President John Dramani Mahama signed the Bill into law on May 11, 2026, stated that the implementation would commence immediately with the establishment of the Council for Legal Education. The process of accrediting law schools that will offer the Law Practice Course or allow LLB holders to take the Law Exams will also begin this year.
The new Act signals a significant change in the legal education landscape by ending the Ghana School of Law's 66-year monopoly over professional legal education. Accredited public and private universities will now be ab le to provide professional legal training, thereby expanding access to legal education across the country.
President Mahama, speaking at the signing ceremony at the Jubilee House, emphasized the importance of the reform, noting it as a significant breakthrough for aspiring lawyers. He highlighted that the Act would ensure high standards in legal education and create more opportunities in the field.
The Legal Education Reform Act, 2025, has been eagerly awaited by many aspiring lawyers as it addresses ongoing concerns about the limited access to professional legal training in Ghana.
