Attorney-General Welcomes Presidential Assent to Legal Education Bill 2026

Accra: Dr Dominic Akrutinga Ayine, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, has hailed President John Dramani Mahama for signing into law the Legal Education Bill 2026. The Act seeks to establish the Council for Legal Education and Training to regulate professional legal education in Ghana and provide the curriculum and standards for legal education. It will also break the monopoly of the Ghana School of Law (GSL) over professional legal education.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Ayine gave the commendation at a press conference moments after the President assented to the Legal Education Bill along with two others-the Governance Advisory Council Bill and Value for Money Office Bill. The Attorney-General stated that the Legal Education Bill was a much-anticipated reform law aimed at creating equality of opportunity for aspiring lawyers in the country.

Dr Ayine expressed readiness for the implementation of the law, noting that immediate steps would include establishing the Council for Legal Education, which will oversee legal education in Ghana. He also mentioned that the accreditation process for law schools intending to offer the Law Practice Course for LLB holders aiming to write the National Bar Exam would commence this year.

In preparation for the implementation, Dr Ayine highlighted plans for budgetary provisions to be included in the 2027 budget, which the Finance Minister is expected to announce in November.
