Accra: Staff of the National Identification Authority (NIA) of the Public Services Workers' Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress have announced their intention to initiate industrial strike action on May 13, 2026. The planned strike is in response to ongoing delays in the approval and implementation of a migration report affecting staff salaries, promotions, and placements.
According to Ghana News Agency, the PSWU issued a press statement, signed by General Secretary Mr. Bernard Adjei, highlighting the Ministry of Finance's role in the delays. The statement criticized the ministry for 'undue delays' in finalizing the process, which has been pending since the Scheme of Service for NIA staff was approved in July 2024. Although the migration exercise commenced in December 2024, it remains incomplete nearly two years later, affecting many staff members' salaries and promotions.
The statement noted that the delay had denied staff their rightful placement, corresponding salary adjustments, and overdue promotions. Despite the completion of the process and the submission of necessary reports, approval from the Ministry of Finance for staff payment is still pending. The union expressed concern over the impact of these delays on industrial peace within the Authority, despite consistent engagement with management and stakeholders.
The union acknowledged management's efforts to assure them of follow-ups but stated that these assurances were insufficient. The PSWU has resolved to proceed with the planned industrial action if the necessary approvals for implementing the migration reports are not received by the set deadline of May 13, 2026.
