Cape coast: Four teachers, an invigilator, and a community member have been detained by security agencies for their alleged participation in examination malpractices during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Central Region.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Juliet Dufie Otame, the Regional Director of Education, revealed the arrests in an interview in Cape Coast. Although she did not disclose specific details about the examination centers, names of the suspects, or the exact nature of their offenses, Dr. Otame confirmed that those apprehended have been handed over to the police for further investigation.
Dr. Otame voiced her concerns over the persistence of malpractice cases despite increased supervision and invigilation efforts by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC). She noted that some teachers involved in these malpractices were motivated by emotional attachment and sympathy towards their students rather than financial incentives.
In response to these incidents, Dr. Otame emphasized that the directorate, alongside WAEC, will enhance security measures in identified hotspot areas across the region. This includes deploying plainclothes security personnel to monitor examination centers more effectively. She issued a stern warning to those engaging in such unlawful activities, stressing that anyone found guilty will face legal consequences to preserve the examination's integrity.
