MIIF Delegation Conducts Strategic Visit to Newmont Ahafo North Mine

Ahafo region: The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), Justina Nelson, spearheaded a high-profile delegation on a working visit to Newmont Corporation's Ahafo North Mine. This initiative is part of MIIF's ongoing engagement program aimed at fortifying relationships with key mining companies.

According to Ghana Web, the visit, which occurred on May 4, 2026, included senior officials such as MIIF's Chief Technical Officer, Kwabena Barning. The delegation engaged with Newmont's management to discuss critical topics including operations, royalties, safety protocols, and environmental performance standards. Nelson lauded Newmont for its unwavering adherence to royalty obligations, emphasizing its importance in bolstering national revenue.

'Beyond financial returns, we are keen on partnerships that promote sustainability and long-term shared value,' Nelson stated. Charles Bissue, General Manager of the Ahafo North Mine, highlighted the substantial investments made in infrastructure and social projects for nearby communities. He noted the mine's performance since its first gold pour in September 2025 aligns with expectations, with its lifespan projected to surpass the initial 14-year estimate.

Bissue also detailed the strategic diversion of a public road in collaboration with government entities and local leaders, enhancing operational efficiency. During the visit, Newmont officials guided the MIIF team through active mining areas, showcasing current production and future expansion plans.

The company emphasized its commendable safety record, with no significant incidents reported this year, attributing this success to robust safety systems including daily risk assessments. Additionally, Newmont elaborated on environmental initiatives such as air and water quality monitoring and waste management. The company has also cultivated over 30,000 seedlings for land reclamation efforts.

Key discussions also centered around industry challenges like illegal mining and site security, underscoring the necessity for sustained cooperation among industry stakeholders.
