Accra: The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed the death of two Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates in a road accident in the Upper West Region. The victims, Taufii Ibrahim and Abdul Khalid, were students of Charia Roman Catholic Junior High School.
According to Ghana Web, preliminary information indicates that the two students died on Sunday, May 3, 2026, while traveling to Wa to join their colleagues ahead of the start of the BECE. GES, in a statement signed by Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, expressed sorrow over the incident, describing it as a painful loss to the education sector. 'We are deeply saddened that these young lives, full of promise and potential, have been cut short under such distressing circumstances,' the statement said.
The Service extended condolences to the families of the deceased, the school, and their colleagues. 'Management and staff of the GES, and the entire education community, extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the school, their classmates, and all who have been affected by this tragic incident,' it added. GES said it will work with relevant authorities to gather full details of the accident and consider steps to prevent similar incidents.
'Management will continue to liaise with the appropriate authorities to gather full details of the incident and explore measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future,' the statement noted. 'May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace,' the statement added.
