Long Courtships and Prayers Not Key to Lasting Marriages, Says Gospel Singer Celestine Donkor

Accra: Gospel musician Celestine Donkor has shared her views on what truly makes a marriage last, noting that long courtships or prayers and fasting are not a guarantee of a successful union. In a video posted on Facebook alongside her husband, Kofi Donkor, the award-winning singer argued that the length of a relationship before marriage means very little if both partners have not made a firm, unwavering commitment to each other.

According to Ghana Web, Celestine Donkor emphasized that it is not the duration of dating or the religious rituals that ensure a lasting marriage. She explained that people who have dated for extensive periods often find unexpected issues in their partners after marriage. Her husband, Kofi Donkor, added that some couples even begin planning a divorce shortly after their wedding.

The Donkors criticized couples who prolong their courtships under the pretense of getting to know each other better. Celestine humorously questioned such couples, likening their long-term dating to an academic course, asking if they were studying economics or psychology.

Celestine Donkor also commented on the younger generation's lack of consistency in relationships. She drew an analogy between marital commitment and a Ghanaian's love for waakye, a popular local dish. She argued that just as a devoted fan of waakye would struggle to give it up despite health warnings, a truly committed spouse would remain steadfast in their marriage through challenges.

In her conclusion, Celestine emphasized that mutual resolve between partners is the true foundation of a lasting marriage, highlighting that a shared decision to stay committed is crucial for enduring unions.
