Effia: Mr. Isaac Boamah, the Member of Parliament for the Effia Constituency in the Western Region, has called for reforms regarding the non-use of calculators for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates. He expressed concerns about the current policy, emphasizing the importance of allowing students to use calculators in their mathematics, science, and ICT examinations.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Boamah, who is also a lawyer and Tax Administrator, made these comments during a visit to schools within the Effia Constituency. The purpose of his visit was to congratulate and encourage students preparing for their 2026 BECE exams. He urged the candidates to maintain a positive mindset, assuring them that success is achievable with the right attitude and behavior.
Mr. Boamah also highlighted the need for subject merger and realignment to reduce the academic burden on students. He stressed the importance of the Education Service implementing stricter monitoring, particularly in government schools in urban and preurban areas, to ensure a fair academic competition among students.
The Effia MP emphasized that human resources are crucial for national development, which necessitates setting a solid educational foundation at the early childhood and basic levels. Mr. Boamah has already supported the students by providing mathematical sets, pencils, pens, and erasers, in addition to financing their mock examinations as practice for the final exams.
Furthermore, he mentioned the constituency's commitment to offering scholarships for needy but academically outstanding students from the BECE to support their further education.
