Jirapa: Mr Charles Lwanga Puozuing, the Upper West Regional Minister, has observed that economic indicators alone cannot adequately define national prosperity, stressing that development must be reflected in the lived realities of citizens. He emphasized that true prosperity should be gauged by the availability of decent jobs, the strength of local enterprises, and the security of livelihoods across various sectors.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Puozuing made these remarks during the 2026 May Day celebration held in Jirapa, themed 'Pivoting to Growth, Jobs and Sustainable Livelihoods Beyond Microeconomic Stability.' The event was marked by processions of various labour unions, with members carrying placards highlighting concerns about the current state of the economy and the needs of workers.
He commended Ghanaian workers for their resilience, patriotism, and contributions to national development. The Minister explained that the government's development strategy focuses on inclusive growth, emphasizing job creation and sustainable livelihoods rather than solely relying on macroeconomic stability.
Mr Puozuing noted that achieving sustainable livelihoods requires more than just central government interventions; it necessitates grassroots-driven development supported by effective local governance and active citizen participation. He highlighted key regional initiatives such as promoting agribusiness and agricultural modernization, strengthening local industries, enhancing technical and vocational skills, supporting small businesses, and expanding infrastructure for commerce and investment.
The Minister acknowledged the concerns of workers regarding wages, conditions of service, and welfare, reaffirming the government's commitment to engaging organized labour through dialogue and promoting fairness and transparency. He mentioned ongoing public sector reforms, including plans to establish an independent emoluments commission to ensure equity and sustainability in remuneration.
Regarding youth unemployment, Mr Puozuing stated that the government is implementing targeted programs like afforestation initiatives, apprenticeship and innovation schemes, and technical and vocational education to equip young people with employable skills. He called for collaboration between the government, labour, private sector, and traditional authorities to drive inclusive development, urging stakeholders to prioritize national interest and unity.
Naa Dinaa Donglabong Ganaa III, the Paramount Chief of the Jirapa Traditional Area, remarked that the theme for the celebration highlights the need to prioritize people-centered development to achieve meaningful progress. He encouraged stakeholders to support local enterprises, empower the youth, and uphold the dignity of labour. The esteemed chief called for unity among labour, leadership, and communities, emphasizing that collective action is essential for achieving sustainable development.
