Accra: The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced the successful full restoration of all power generation units at the Akosombo switchyard. This comes in the wake of a fire outbreak in the control room that significantly disrupted power evacuation from the dam.
According to Ghana Web, John Jinapor communicated the stabilization of the country's power system through a Facebook post on May 1, 2026. He praised the engineers, technicians, and emergency teams for their relentless efforts in restoring electricity to the national grid, highlighting their discipline and commitment as key factors in achieving this milestone.
The minister elaborated on the restoration process, stating, "Mission accomplished. All generation units are now back in service. In the face of a major system disruption and against all odds, our engineers, technicians, and emergency teams worked around the clock to restore power and stabilize the grid." His statement celebrated the collective efforts and resilience of the personnel involved in overcoming the challenges posed by the fire.
John Jinapor also acknowledged the crucial roles played by the leadership and staff of key state power institutions, including the Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Volta River Authority (VRA), and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). He extended his gratitude for their coordination and swift response, which were instrumental in restoring the power supply.
The fire at the Akosombo switchyard led to the loss of approximately 1,000 megawatts, marking one of the most severe disruptions to the country's electricity system in recent years. President John Dramani Mahama had visited the substation on April 30, 2026, to assess the situation and support the ongoing efforts to restore power.
