ECG Installs New Transformer to Boost Power Supply and Economic Activity in Chorkor

Accra: The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has installed a new transformer at Chorkor 31st, near Korle-Bu in Accra, to improve power reliability and support economic activities in the area.

According to Ghana News Agency, the project, which cost approximately GHS 290,000, involved the installation of an additional 315kVA transformer to augment an existing one that had become overloaded due to increased demand. ECG stated that the intervention was aimed at permanently resolving frequent power outages and phase-offs experienced by residents and businesses in the community, particularly during peak periods.

The upgrade also included the installation of a non-extensible ring main unit switch, a six-way distribution panel, and protective and system earthing infrastructure to ensure operational efficiency and safety at the substation. Prior to the project, ECG's Accra West Regional Management engaged key stakeholders, including community leaders and opinion leaders, to better understand the impact of unreliable power supply on households and local enterprises.

At the commissioning, Mrs. Sariel Etwire, the Accra West Regional General Manager of ECG, expressed appreciation to residents and stakeholders for their cooperation during the project implementation. She noted that the company fully funded the transformer installation as part of its broader strategy to enhance service delivery and address infrastructure constraints in high-demand communities. "We are happy to witness the completion of this project. It is our hope that it brings relief and a stable power supply to support domestic life and economic activities in this community," she said.

Mrs. Etwire emphasized the importance of protecting ECG infrastructure, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any unauthorized interference with electricity installations to the nearest ECG office or the police. Mr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, commended ECG for the timely intervention, noting that unreliable electricity supply had adversely affected businesses and social life in the area.

He cautioned residents against engaging in illegal electricity connections, warning that such practices could overload the new transformer and undermine the benefits of the investment. Mr. Vanderpuije encouraged the community to report any illegal connections to ECG to ensure corrective action and safeguard long-term power stability.

The transformer installation forms part of ECG's ongoing nationwide programme to upgrade and expand distribution infrastructure to meet rising electricity demand. ECG said it is currently undertaking large-scale transformer installations across its operational areas to reduce system overloads, improve power reliability, and minimize outages. The Accra West Region, which oversees districts including Ablekuma, Achimota, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, Kaneshie, Korle-Bu, and Nsawam, continues to experience growing electricity demand driven by urbanization and expanding commercial activity.

The company expressed optimism that such targeted investments would enhance electricity supply stability, boost productivity, and support local economic growth.
