Rabat: Their Royal Highnesses Princesses Lalla Khadija, Lalla Meryem, and Lalla Hasnaa, along with Brigitte Macron, attended the opening performance of the Royal Theater of Rabat. The event marked a significant cultural milestone for Morocco's capital.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Princesses and Mrs Macron were welcomed by members of the Board of Directors of the Royal Theater of Rabat Foundation, with Princess Lalla Hasnaa presiding as its President. The dignitaries proceeded to the Royal Box to witness the inaugural show.
The ceremony began with a documentary highlighting the Royal Theater of Rabat as a pivotal cultural institution, emblematic of the artistic transformation in Rabat and Morocco's commitment to creative industries. The screening was followed by a performance of the Moroccan national anthem by the orchestra and choir, setting the stage for an eclectic musical programme.
The evening's performance featured pianist Marouan Benabdallah, mezzo-soprano Ahlima Mhamdi, and singer Samira Kadiri, showcasing a blend of classical, operatic, and Arab-Andalusian compositions. Driss El Maloumi, a composer and oud player, presented a contemporary piece inspired by Moroccan musical heritage.
A remarkable highlight was the collaboration between the Morocco Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Symphony Orchestra, performing together for the first time. Under the baton of conductor Dina Bensad, the ensemble of 76 musicians and 40 choristers delivered selections from Tchaikovsky, Bizet, and Verdi, interwoven with Moroccan and Andalusian motifs.
At the conclusion of the performance, the Princesses and Brigitte Macron met with the participating artists, extending their appreciation to the performers, including Samira Kadiri, Ahlima Mhamdi, Dina Bensad, Marouan Benabdallah, Driss El Maloumi, and Younes Terfas, Director of the Royal Symphony Orchestra.
The event drew an audience of Moroccan and international artists, cultural figures, intellectuals, and members of the diplomatic community, underscoring Rabat's emerging status as a cultural hub. Situated in the Bouregreg Valley, the Royal Theater is part of a broader urban development initiative aimed at establishing Rabat as a key cultural destination under the 'Rabat, City of Light, Moroccan Capital of Culture' programme.
