Ankobra: Madam Angela List, Chief Executive Officer of Adamus Resources Limited, a subsidiary of Nguvu Mining Company, has initiated the establishment of a GHS 1 million Community Health Primary Services (CHPS) Compound for residents of Ankobra, a fishing and farming community in the Ellembelle District. The facility, which includes accommodation for nurses, aims to address emergency situations and healthcare needs of people whose livelihoods depend on the galamsey-polluted river and sea.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Edmund Kofi Eshun, Social Responsibility Superintendent of Adamus Resources at Salman, stated in an interview at Ankobra during the foundation stage of the CHPS Compound that the project is part of the company's Corporate Social Responsibility. It is expected to be completed by December 2026 and handed over to the Ghana Health Services for use. Mr. Eshun commended Madam Angela List for contributing to the socio-economic development needs within the catchment area of Adamus Resources Limited in the Ellembelle District.
Mr. Eshun expressed concern over the increase in illegal mining activities, known as galamsey, in the Ellembelle District, which presents challenges in delivering healthcare services to the local population. He added that Adamus Resources Limited is committed to building more healthcare facilities in the communities in response to the situation.
Mr. Patrick Assuah, the Assembly Member for Ankobra, praised the efforts of Madam Angela List in bringing a CHPS compound to Ankobra, a first in the history of the predominantly fishing and farming community. He highlighted the lack of medical facilities and the difficulties faced by residents in accessing healthcare, especially during emergencies.
Mr. Assuah noted that approximately 100 canoes of fishermen and fishmongers from Shama, Agona-Nkwanta, and other areas converge in the town for business each month, making a health center crucial in the event of any epidemic. He recalled a cholera outbreak three years ago in the Ankobra community that resulted in numerous fatalities.
The Assembly Member also mentioned that non-communicable diseases require diagnosis in Axim due to the absence of healthcare facilities in Ankobra. He praised Madam Angela List for providing scholarship packages to students in tertiary institutions over the past two years and ensuring that residents displaced by Adamus Resources Limited operations received compensation to build new homes.
