Accra: The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has signed a short-term contract with Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz to lead the Black Stars in their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Queiroz, who has managed prestigious teams like Real Madrid, Manchester United, Portugal, and Iran, brings extensive World Cup experience, having led South Africa in 2002, Portugal in 2010, and Iran in 2014 and 2018.
According to Ghana Web, the GFA's contract with Queiroz spans four months, allowing for an assessment of his performance during the World Cup. This interim arrangement is designed to prevent premature dismissal scenarios that result in hefty compensation packages. Initially, Queiroz expected a salary of $200,000 per month, but negotiations have adjusted this figure to approximately $100,000, with discussions ongoing to finalize the payment terms.
The contract includes a review after the World Cup, a strategic move by the GFA following criticism over past tournament performances. This review will evaluate Queiroz's playing style and management of the team before considering a long-term contract. Additionally, Queiroz plans to bring four technical assistants, complicating matters for the existing Black Stars technical staff who served under previous coach Otto Addo.
