Rotary Club Enhances Maternity Services with New Facility in Kpando

Kpando: The Rotary Club of Ho has commissioned and delivered a refurbished maternity block to the Kpando Health Centre to enhance maternal and newborn healthcare delivery in the municipality and its surrounding communities.

According to Ghana News Agency, the facility is expected to improve access to quality maternal services and strengthen healthcare outcomes for women and newborns in the area. The commissioning ceremony brought together health officials, government representatives, traditional authorities, and community members, who described the project as timely and impactful.

Dr. Alphonse Makafui Dzakpasu, Acting Deputy Director of Clinical Services, said the upgraded facility would help sustain maternal mortality rates below the national average. He explained that supervised deliveries at the health centre were expected to increase from an average of 15-25 cases to between 40 and 50. 'This will significantly improve maternal and neonatal outcomes and strengthen service delivery in the area,' Dr Dzakpasu said. He added that the project would boost emergency obstetric and neonatal care, contributing to reduced morbidity and mortality across the catchment area.

Dr. Dzakpasu commended the Rotary Club of Ho for its continued support to healthcare institutions, including the Ho Teaching Hospital. Mr. James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, lauded the initiative, noting that it aligned with the government's agenda of improving access to quality healthcare and achieving Sustainable Development Goal Three (SDG 3).

Mr. Maxwell Affram, President of the Rotary Club of Ho, expressed appreciation to partners and stakeholders for their support in executing the project. He urged the management of the health centre and the community to take ownership of the facility and ensure its proper maintenance. The Paramount Chief of Kpando, Togbe Dagadu IX, described the project as the fulfilment of a long-standing need. He said the refurbished facility would restore dignity and hope to mothers and newborns while improving healthcare delivery in the area.

The project involved renovation works and the provision of essential equipment to address infrastructural gaps and strengthen emergency response systems. Health authorities expressed optimism that the development would support the facility's transition into a polyclinic with expanded capacity to serve the growing population.
